7/26/05: Johnny saves our bacon

Red Sox 10 - Devil Rays 9

In a game that looked like it might be a laugher, no one was laughing when Matt Clement took a hard liner off the back of his head. That was nasty to watch. Good news is it appears he'll be fine.

Clement went out with the Sox up 5-1. Manny had a two run dinger in the first and we got three more to go up 5-1. Enter (hanging) Chad Bradford, who gave up a grand slam and next thing you know it's all even.

Note: Delcarmen, a rookie making his major league debut, pitches a 1-2-3 eigth for us. This guy was throwing some cheese.

Fast foreward to the ninth. We managed to score 2 on a Tek homer and a Mueller double to tie it at 8. We could have had more but Olerud runs like he's in quick sand and got gunned down at the plate. The Rays come up and have Lugo, a fast runner on first. Cantu hits a shot to the gap in left center, Johnny was playing deep, so he's got a bead on it and leaps a couple feet in the air for the huge out.

Johnny leads off the 10th with a homer. The place goes nuts. It's got to be 75% Sox fans in the seats. We got another run and managed to hold on as Schill gave us yet another thrill in the closers job.

We needed this one after letting the game before get away from us.
