7/25/05: Slipping Clutch

Here's one we could have won with just a smattering of clutch hitting. We had 10 hits and were issued 6 walks, and only scored 4 times. That's pretty poor. Throw in a base running screw up or two, and you get the loss.

Arroyo was not sharp. He gave up 6 runs in 6 2/3. Papi started things in the first with a solo shot, and we got another run in the second but Bronso couldn't make it stand up. He got lit up pretty good. Contreras wasn't much better, but he was lucky. We just couldn't get that single when we needed it.

Tek had another homer and closed it a bit. In the ninth we're down 6-3. We got couple of guys on and scored one of them, but Olerud grounded weakly to second on a 3-2 pitch to end it.

Bone head play of the game: Millar thinking he's Ricky Henderson trying to stretch a single to a double. He was out by 20 feet. This is one aera this team needs to improve on. We've run into more outs this year than I can remember. A lot of them are not even close. These are not outs at the plate, either. Just head down (or head up something else) running.

We split in Chicago's house, so it's not that bad. Three of four would have been much better.
