Deal Time?

With the day off yesterday I was thinking about the soap opera that usually shows itself this time of year. You know, dog days when the hottest topic is who's going where, what holes do we have, how we gonna fill them, are we going to trade another quality young guy for some rag armed relief pitcher. And, the annual Manny saga reared it's ugly head right on time.

First, no team in the AL East has a solid pitching staff. The Yankees looked like they added a star studded 3-some in the off season only to have most of them on the DL and really not pitching that well when they're in there. Rivera looks good as does Gordon and Sturtz, so the Yankees bullpen is better than ours.

The O's, forget it. Their staff was pitching over their heads while the line-up was hurt. The line up is pretty much back and the pitching isn't. They could put it together but don't count on it. And by the way, thank Theo for passing on Sosa.

The Jays could be a surprise, but outside of Halladay that don't have much and with him out long term I'm not worried.

We have Trot out long term and Foulke a question mark. We have a rotation that's been serviceable. Wells has steadied things nicely. Wake has been good, Arroyo and Clement have been a bit shaky lately, and you don't know what Miller's gonna give you. Timlin and Myers have been pretty good, and Schill at closer scares me. Schill at starter right now might scare me. He's been around 93-94 with his fastball, so the velocity is coming back.

You can never have too much money or too much pitching. I think the line-up is fine. Deal to get quality pitching wherever you can find it. It would be nice to get another quality starter but they don't grow on trees. Look at the Yankees, calling up triple A players and signing journey men to start. With their money they'd a bought a good starter if one were available. We need so much help even a quality long guy would be good.

I don't want to see a Bagwell for Anderson trade, though. I like Youk, and don't think the Sox will sign Mueller next year. If we trade Youk we better more than an old arm for 2 months. Theo isn't afraid to make the block buster, so we'll have to sit tight and trust we can make the pitching staff better than the Yankees and O's can make theirs.
