Do the math. Bases loaded, nobody out with Trot, Manny and Papi coming out. What is the probability we do not score? Answer… very very low. Yet, that’s what we did in the 4th. Again we left double digit runners on base and scored a lousy three runs. Every year we go through stretches like this and it’s always maddening. If we had 5 hits and scored 3 runs, then hats off to the apposing pitcher. We’ve just stunk, even in our recent wins, delivering guys from scoring position.
Too bad because Jeremi Gonzalez pitched a halfway decent game. Three runs in 5 innings is nothing great, but he did K 7 and walk only one. I’ll take that from an ‘emergency’ starter any time.
Neal is awful. I think this guy may quickly be earning himself a ticket to the back of the pen. Whereas Mantei looked very good. 1 2/3, 3 K’s, no walks or hits. Then Embry let the horse out of the barn. It’s starting to look like Embry just can’t right handed hitters out. And the lefty he faced shoots a low outside pitch to the gap for a double. Good pitch, better hitting. The combo of Timlin and Embry is getting a little long in the tooth. Both in their later 30’s. Both effective for the most part, but we may need to think about more specialized roles for them.
McCarty being ‘designated for assignment’ is too bad. I really liked him. I thought his glove was very good, and he always had a good attitude. I hope it works out that he’s somehow able to stay with the team.
